Good News Story: Janice
“Coming to Djerriwarrh has helped me a lot and given me the experience of how to work in the Australian environment”
Janice immigrated to Australia from the Philippines in 2009. In November 2010, she commenced LLNP developing her reading, writing, communication, numeracy and learning skills. In July 2011, Janice became a volunteer administrative assistant at Djerriwarrh whilst continuing with her LLNP training. In October 2011, Janice accepted a role as a casual administrator at Djerriwarrh and exited LLNP. She continues to work at Djerriwarrh.
How have you found the whole experience at Djerriwarrh?
Everyone at Djerriwarrh has been welcoming and helpful.
Why did you choose to come to Djerriwarrh?
I wanted to work but I needed to improve my English language skills so I asked to be referred to LLNP via Centrelink. Coming to Djerriwarrh has helped me a lot and given me the experience of how to work in the Australian environment – meeting people is really good.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying?
It’s good to study – meeting people, learning with others is so good. You learn about the Australian culture and the people and it’s easier to find a job. It’s great to do something so that you meet new people. It’s much better to study than to stay at home.
What are your dreams for the future?
In the Philippines I didn’t have the opportunity to study. I left school at 13 to work and support my family. But now, I’m really enjoying learning new things everyday. In the future I would like to keep doing administration and would like to get my Certificate III in Business Administration.
